In 2016 - 2018, I served as a trainer for the Warning Decision Training Division (WDTD). Formerly known as the Warning Decision Training Branch, WDTD develops and delivers training on the integrated elements of the warning process involving a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) / National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office and its partners. WDTD instructors develop and deliver a variety of in-residence, teletraining, and on-line asynchronous training content to meet this mission.
At WDTD, I worked as a CIMMS contractor to help develop and deliver the Radar Applications Course and Warning Operations Course, which are required training for NWS forecasters who issue severe, tornado, and flash-flood warnings. He was the lead author on: Z, V & SRM, SW, CC, ZDR, KDP, Rainfall Estimation Errors, PPS Algorithm, QPE Algorithm, PPS/QPE Comparison, CAMs, Available CAMs, High-res Ensembles, Available Ensembles, and co-produced social media data mining lessons.
Though WDTD's intended audience is NWS forecasters, I recommend the trainings for meteorology students interested in the weather service. Available topics include: radar basics and interpretation, winter weather applications, convective storms, flash floods, warning fundamentals, situational awareness best practices, etc. The team at WDTD is incredible and I encourage those interested in NWS/training careers to look for job postings.
